What Kind of Place Is Urayasu?
Urayasu is a city in Chiba Prefecture on the coast of Tokyo Bay. Since the opening of Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, hotels and commercial facilities have concentrated here, making it an international tourist destination visited by tens of millions annually. The city is roughly divided into three areas:
- Maihama area: The tourist core directly connected to TDR. Hotel district, Ikspiari, Bon Voyage, and more.
- Shin-Urayasu area: The mid-city and new-town district centered on JR Keiyo Line's Shin-Urayasu Station. Shopping facilities, hotels, and a concert hall.
- Urayasu Station area (Moto-machi): The area around Tokyo Metro Tozai Line's Urayasu Station. A historic old town where the character of a former fishing village from the Edo–Meiji era remains.
The 3 Areas at a Glance
| Area | Nearest Station | Key Features | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maihama | JR Maihama Station (Keiyo Line) | TDR directly connected, Ikspiari, official hotels. Tourism facilities concentrated | Park visitors, shopping, 1–2 hours to fill time |
| Shin-Urayasu | JR Shin-Urayasu Station (Keiyo Line) | Atre, Aeon, Wave101, many partner hotels. Everyday commercial area | Hotel guests, shopping, concert / sports events |
| Urayasu Station | Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, Urayasu Station | Local History Museum, historic houses, Sakaigawa canal walk. Retains Showa-era atmosphere | History and town-walk enthusiasts, those also travelling into central Tokyo |
The three areas are separated by train and cannot be reached on foot. (Maihama to Shin-Urayasu: 1 stop on the Keiyo Line, about 5–7 minutes. Maihama to Urayasu Station: including transfer, about 30–40 minutes.) If you plan to visit multiple areas in one trip, allow generous travel time.
